New Year’s Resolutions

As part of the management team of West Hartford Yoga, I’ve come to expect the annual influx of students after the first of the year. Our classes are full — with those who have never practiced yoga; those coming for the first time; as well as returning members, renewing their connection to the community and their practice. Our staff and teachers gear up for the excitement and challenge of the busiest time of the year.

In some ways, the January influx is a bit of a cultural blip — predicated by the Julian calendar and the fairly arbitrary designation of January 1st as the “new year” with its focus on turning over a new leaf.  However, coming so soon after the winter solstice, when daylight begins to return, and following the late harvest holidays and the winter holidays of light that keep us busy and perhaps a bit overly nourished, January is a perfect time to get back on the mat!

We know that for some, this reconnection to the practice will be short-lived. Regardless, welcome. We love to see familiar faces, as well as new ones — know that each time you come to your mat, whether one a day or once a month, it is a new adventure and opportunity. We also know that some of you will be drawn in to this practice and seek to deepen your mind-body connection. And for those of you who will become essential members of the tribe in the coming weeks and month, we’re so glad you have found your way here.
